The Green Corner has a vision of reducing the impact of socio-economic gap over communities in slum dwellers in the city and those in rural areas, and empowering these people with holistic education and decision-making abilities by means of recreational programmes, environmental conservation support, cultural initiatives, and awareness generation campaigns.
The Green Corner is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) established in 2008, based out of Kolkata, a city in the Eastern part of India. Inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, a bunch of energetic youngsters sat together one fine evening and shared their deeply cherished dream to do something good for the neglected masses of the Indian society. In Kolkata and areas of rural West Bengal itself, almost 5 million people live below the poverty line and some 3.5 million people live on the streets and are slums dwellers in the city. Founders of The Green Corner took upon the responsibility on their shoulders to make a difference in lives of these people, and embarked on a journey of activities aimed at ‘restoring green environment in city, providing educational recreation to underprivileged rural children and urban street-children, thereby empowering sustainable development of the society’. That is how The Green Corner was born, and is slowly progressing in a noble journey with support from well-wishers and willing volunteers.
